Hail Roof Damage
Can Hail Really Cause Damage To Your Roof?
Roof Damage by Hailstones
The “Butterfly Effect” is the theory that a seemingly insignificant event likes the wind movement caused by the flapping of a butterfly’s wings leads to a typhoon elsewhere through a series of convoluted events.
A true example of the Butterfly Effect is when a minute dust particle and cold unstable air mix and a small ice crystal forms over the particle. Swirling around in the freezing storm, the ice crystal grows until it finally succumbs to gravity and falls to the earth as hail striking your roof or your car.
Hit by A Hailstorm
Small hail particles are harmless but in rare cases, they can reach the size of a golf ball or larger. The biggest hailstone ever documented was an eight-inch cluster of ice that weighed nearly two pounds that fell in Vivian. Oklahoma in 2010. Hailstones of this size can be deadly reaching speeds of over 100 miles per hour as they fall.
The likelihood of you personally being struck by a softball size hailstone is minimum, but homeowners face a more serious problem with roof damage and the destruction of roof shingles.
What Happens When Your Roof Is Hit by Hailstones
Roof shingles are commonly made with asphalt or a composition material (usually fiberglass coated with asphalt and mineral fillers) as well as wood, slate, and metal. While a large jagged hailstone might puncture any of these it is more likely the damage will be dents, chips, and cracks. In the case of asphalt and composition, the loss of the asphalt granules may cause a black, shiny soft spot on the roof.
