How to Measure For a Window Replacement - Our Guide
Advanced Exterior MN
Even if you could invest all your money on the best and beautiful window on the market, it will be utterly useless if it isn't sized correctly. If you are getting a window custom made, you will want to be extra careful, as most custom window companies will not allow a refund.
It really won't matter how your window looks if it isn't sized correctly for your window, so make sure you get the sizing correct the first time around to save yourself the time and effort. Here are the steps to accurately measure your window for a proper replacement:
Horizontal measurement
You will want to start with measuring the width from one side jamb to the other side jamb at three different points. This means from the top, the middle, and the bottom.
You want to make sure that you measure from the surface of each jamb rather than the trim strips or parting stops. You should write down all the measurements then circle the smallest figure to give your contractors a rough opening width.
Vertical measurement
For your vertical height, you should measure the top of the frame to the window sill at three points. Measure the left side, the middle, and the right side. If your window sill has a slope, you will want to measure it at the highest point, right against the window.
Do the same as the previous measurement and write it down, then circle the smallest digit. This will give you the rough opening height that you can then give to the contractor.
Measuring depth
Some windows may not fit the bottom of your window opening, so it's crucial that you measure this accurately. To get this done correctly, you should measure the outside edge of the frame to the inside edge at several various locations. Again, use the smallest figure as the one to give to your contractor.
If you cannot open your window, measure each side of the glass and add these numbers together. Then add one-eighth inches to account for the thickness of the windowpane. These measurements will allow you to confidently provide your contractor with the right information needed for your new window replacements.
Choosing your windows
This is the fun part; where you get to pick out the design and color window that you want. There are different styles with different designs that you can pick from. As wide a variety as there is, you want to make sure that it fits your home's overall architectural style. It's not always just about looks though; you want to make sure that your windows meet all the functional needs you might have as well as remaining in your budget. Just remember that you want to prioritize a window's overall durability; this means looks, color, and style. Make sure you can afford it and that it does what you need it to do in terms of functionality, but besides that, you should make sure to consider all these so that you can adequately prioritize your personal needs.
